Q. Have you heard of Software as a Service? What are your thoughts on the SaaS industry in general?
Yes, I’ve heard of SaaS at my previous company, which provides SaaS monitoring services like Datadog. I believe the demand in the industry has increased significantly, and the market will keep growing in the future because it still has a lot of advantages. Companies do not need to invest significant money and time in setting up a particular service to use since the SaaS takes on most of the burden of the service. They need to subscribe to a specific model to use the service. It may eliminate the burden on companies.
Q. Do you use Software as a Service at your workplace? Why or why not?
Yes, I use Slack which is a cloud-based business communication tool used by worldwide customers. I think the reason my company uses this SaaS product is that they provide pretty good features as a workplace communication tool. It would be better to use a SaaS rather than to develop our own internal communication tool as Slack has more knowledge on cloud-based business communication.
Q. What problems have you encountered when using SaaS products? In what ways have they been helpful for your business?
I haven’t encountered difficulties when using SaaS products, but I heard there could be some bugs, as SaaS products are also software. The problem is that using SaaS products causes dependency on them, which means that if there are any bugs, we need to wait until Slack fixes them. Or sometimes, we may not even know why it happened. Alternatively, using SaaS products provides convenience. For instance, I don’t receive many emails at my company. My co-workers have conversations on Slack frequently. There’s no need to write a long email to communicate.
* On the other hand/ Alternatively/ Conversely
Q. What new issues do you think SaaS products might introduce to the field of data security?
SaaS products may become vulnerable if they can’t protect users’ data. For example, the employees of our company have a lot of conversations on Slack, and sometimes it may include confidential topics that shouldn’t be leaked. If hackers attack SaaS products on purpose, there’s the risk that hackers will disclose internal information.
* Confidential/ proprietary (company has ownership over the information)/ sensitive
Q. What should companies who have sensitive information do?
I think they still need to use a SaaS, but they need to use an additional cybersecurity program to protect their data from hackers. Even though SaaS companies maintain that they provide some security, it's not wise to depend on their security function.
Q. What kind of additional measures should these companies take?
For example, I don't really remember any specific product names, but companies can consult professional cybersecurity programs because every company has different amounts of employees and data. Companies can back up their data just in case they lose access on SaaS products.
Q. Aside from communication, what other types of SaaS products are common?
Yes, there are many examples. One is a Korean SaaS company that provides HR services. For example, if we need to apply for leave, there should be some record of employees leaves. The brand name is Flex, and they provide my leave information. Also, they share other colleagues' leave information, so we follow who is on leave.
Q. What are traits that make a good SaaS?
First of all, the price should be reasonable. The SaaS should be a good deal. When we consider the price, is it really worth paying for these features or should we look at other SaaS products. Price should be an important trait.
I think another important trait is support. How well do SaaS companies support customers if they have any issues. Some SaaS companies have account managers who are responsible for their customers, so it's convenient to contact them directly. Some of them provide real-time chat on their websites, like my HR program. When I had a question, I didn't need to contact our HR team, I could ask the program directly.
Q. How should SaaS companies evolve over time to meet the needs of their customers?
One of my ideas is that SaaS companies can create alliances. For example, there are popular SaaS companies, like Adobe or Microsoft. If they provide a program between their companies, it could be an opportunity to increase their customer bases.
A customer base is a group of customers who constantly buy and engage with your company. It’s different from a target market, because your target market may be interested in your product, but may not make a transaction. A customer base has already made a purchase and continues to make purchases.
