Q. What are your first impressions of the metaverse? Have you heard of this concept before?

There have been many occasions where I've heard of the metaverse, and I believe this is because it's not as new of a term anymore. Even before the term "metaverse" was created, there had previously been various kinds of movies and novels that spoke about this futuristic, virtual world.

 

My first impression of the metaverse led me to believe that a new era of technology was upon us, thus causing me to ponder how it would affect our future. In the case of smartphones, they've been advantageous in our lives due to their abilities to provide us with opportunities that exceed physical limitations.

 

The metaverse would work similarly to smartphones. It would give us access to opportunities that we've previously thought were impossible to achieve.

 

Q. What aspects of the metaverse excite you?

The advancements that the metaverse brings will technologically broaden our horizons. Due to the limitations of distance, time, and energy, we are currently unable to explore many parts of the world, especially when we don't have easy access to these resources. However, within the metaverse, there are none of these limitations, and we'd be able to do many of the things that we can't on Earth.

 

Q. What aspects of the metaverse frighten you?

I'm afraid that a system like the metaverse would cause some people to lose their grasp on reality, thus causing them to be unable to distinguish between the physical and virtual worlds. For example, if someone is not satisfied with their physical appearance, they may attempt to correct these flaws within the virtual reality of the metaverse. Even though this reality wouldn't be physically real, if people become too attached to it there's a potential of new social issues developing.

 

Q. How might people act differently in the metaverse compared to the physical world? Think about appearance, behavior, etc.

As I've stated before, I believe that people may attempt to create virtual avatars that are "improvements" of themselves. For example, if someone held the belief that they don't have acceptable skin, in the physical world that person may choose to spend money on treatments from a skin-care specialist. But in the metaverse, they wouldn't need to spend money because they can simply create an avatar that does have perfect skin.
